Dr. Thomas Wagner, Permanent guest of honor at the University of Zurich

The Extended University Management appoints Dr. Thomas Wagner permanent guest of honor of the University of Zurich at the request of the rector. In doing so, she recognizes his great services as a founding member and longstanding President of the Foundation for Small Animals of the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich. It is thanks to his extraordinary commitment that the Foundation for Small Animals has developed successfully in a short time and has repeatedly made significant contributions to the Small Animal Clinic.

Dr. Thomas Wagner was born in Zurich on October 17, 1943. He studied and obtained his doctorate in medicine and law at the University of Zurich. He then worked as an assistant and doctor in the field of ophthalmology. Thomas Wagner’s political career began early, in 1965 he became a member of the Free Democratic Party, 1969 municipal councilor and from 1978 to 2002 city councilor of Zurich. From 1982 to 1990 Thomas Wagner was city president.

In addition to his great commitment to cultural policy, his work in connection with the Chinese city of Kunming deserves a special mention. As city president, he initiated the city partnership between Zurich and Kunming in 1982. He was responsible for several valuable pilot projects between the two cities in the areas of culture, environment and urban development. Even after his resignation from the city council, Thomas Wagner continued his work in China to this day. He heads a consulting firm that specializes in exchanges between Switzerland and the People’s Republic of China on an economic, cultural and tourist level. The commitment received multiple recognition in the People’s Republic of China. Thomas Wagner is an honorary citizen of the cities of Kunming and Dalian. He is also the only Swiss ambassador for the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. He is a Distinguished Professor at Tongji University, Shanghai and Kunming University.

In addition, Thomas Wagner is on the board of various foundations. He is a founding member and president of the Foundation for Small Animals at the University of Zurich. Thanks to his commitment and his never-ending activity, he was able to make a significant contribution to the foundation being able to make a contribution to the new small animal clinic in 2010. Since then, the foundation has continued to support the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich.
